This species of sock monkey is from the Rockford Red Heel family, closely related to the original Red Heel Sock Monkeys which were first discovered in the early 1900’s America. The species grew significantly in numbers during the depression when purse strings were tight and creativity was high, but their true origins and original birth place are mostly unknown. Numbers have dwindled over the years, however the Sock Monkey now celebrates cult status among collectors world-wide and is an American institution.
Our Sock Monkeys are handmade in Australia by Monkeytail and Wellington (actually by their Mum) using genuine Rockford Red Heel socks imported from the USA. They’re stuffing is wool, their eyes are thread and the cheekiness is 100% pure. They stand approximately 20” tall. They are hand washable in warm soapy water and if they are heavily loved, can be given a light lint shave from time to time to keep up appearances.
As each monkey is handmade, they are completely unique. Each has their own expressions from the position of the mouth, ears and eyes and some turn out quite plump, while others turn out tall and slender.
We hand embroider all the features on Monkeys so they are baby safe, but we still recommend complete adult supervision. Sock Monkeys that come with removable clothing are not recommended for children under 3 years due to any small parts that the clothing may contain.
We have been making sock monkeys for several years now and have even on occasion branched out into other species of the animal kingdom, but the original sock monkey and it popularity among friends and family is what started Monkeytail and Wellington.
Every one of our sock monkeys are made to order so they may take upto 3 days to ship. |
